How MortgageExplained works

MortgageExplained is a UK mortgage information website operated by Muswell Rose Consulting Limited. We explain how mortgages work in plain English. We do not give regulated advice, we are not a broker and we are not a lender. When you want a mortgage arranged, you need a regulated mortgage broker, which you choose yourself. The guides are free to read with no email gate.

Information first, then your own choice of adviser

Most mortgage websites are either a lender trying to sell you their own product, or a comparison page that ranks deals on price alone. Neither explains the part that actually decides whether you can borrow: the lender's criteria, and how your income is read. That is the gap we fill. We explain the rules in plain English so you understand your position before anyone runs a credit check.

When you are ready to act, the sensible next step for most people, especially with complex income, is to talk to a mortgage broker who can advise you. You choose the broker; our guide to how to find one explains how to check them. They give the regulated advice and arrange the mortgage. We do not.

The three steps

  1. 1. Read. Use the guides to understand your situation. There is no sign-up and no email gate to read anything.
  2. 2. Decide. Work out what you need, what is realistic, and what a lender will want to see.
  3. 3. Choose an adviser. If you want advice on your own case, pick a regulated mortgage broker yourself. You can also send us a short enquiry; it goes to the Mortgage Explained team, not to a broker.

Why independence matters here

A lot of well-known mortgage brands are now owned by banks, lenders or comparison conglomerates. That ownership shapes what they show you. MortgageExplained is independent. We are not paid to push one lender, and the guidance is written by someone who used to arrange these mortgages, not by a marketing team.

Common questions

Do you give mortgage advice?

No. We explain how mortgages work in general terms. Regulated advice, a recommendation about a specific product for your circumstances, comes from a regulated mortgage broker, not from us.

How do you make money?

Using the site is free and we do not charge for enquiries. The embedded Propillo tools carry a referral code, so Propillo may pay us if you use its service; that never changes what you pay. Full detail is on how we are funded.

Are you independent?

Yes. MortgageExplained is owned and operated by Muswell Rose Consulting Limited and is not owned by a bank, a lender or a comparison portal. Our editorial judgement about what to explain, and how plainly, is our own.

Next step

Send us your situation

Tell us your situation. It goes to the Mortgage Explained team by email. We are not a broker and cannot advise on your mortgage. No obligation.

Sending an enquiry is free. We do not currently pass enquiries on to a mortgage broker or any other firm. This is information, not advice. We are not a mortgage broker and do not arrange mortgages.
