Accessibility and clarity

Clarity is the whole point of MortgageExplained. We write in plain English, answer the question first, define the jargon, and design for strong contrast and easy reading. Reducing ambiguity helps everyone, including people who are neurodivergent or reading under stress.

Why clarity comes first

Mortgages are full of jargon, caveats and "it depends". That ambiguity is expensive: when an explanation is vague, people give up or make worse decisions. So we treat clear writing as an accessibility feature, not a nicety. When something is explicit, people relax. That is as true for a stressed first-time buyer as it is for a neurodivergent reader, and building for the person who needs the most clarity makes the site better for everyone.

How we write

Every guide answers the question first, in a short summary, before the detail. We write in plain English, spell out what a term means the first time we use it, keep sentences and paragraphs short, and put the practical "what to do next" up front. We do not gate the guides behind an email form, so you can read everything freely.

How we design

We aim for the WCAG 2.1 AA colour-contrast standard across the site and check it on every release with an automated rendered-contrast test, so text stays readable. Pages use real headings and landmarks so screen readers and assistive tools can navigate them, links describe where they go, and the layout works on a phone as well as a desktop. Any tools and calculators work in the page without needing an account.

Where we can do better

Accessibility is never finished. If something on this site is hard to read, hard to use, or unclear, we want to know. Tell us what got in your way and we will fix it. Email [email protected].
